Professor yalemtsehay Mekonnen: the first female professor from AAU Professor Yalemtsehay Mekonnen is a biologist and an academic member of staﬀ at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Addis Ababa University. She has worked in this Department for the last 30 years. She received her PhD, specialising in human physiology, from the University of Heidelberg in Germany. One of her research areas is the assessment of the impact of chemical pesticide hazard on humans. Tis research covers almost all government farms including the Upper Awash Agricultural farms and some private horticultural farms in the Rif Valley region. Te other area of her research is in the use of plants as medicine against human and animal diseases. Dr Aklilu Lemma and the battle against bilharzia (schistosomiasis) Schistosomiasis (also known as bilharziasis) is a common parasitic disease. It aﬀects 200–300 million people in Africa (including Ethiopia), South America, Asia and parts of the Caribbean. It is caused by parasitic ﬂatworms which spend part of their lifecycle in freshwater snails and part in humans. Anyone washing, working or playing in shallow fresh water is at risk. Once inside a person, the parasites mature and produce eggs which are passed out in the urine and faeces. Tey also infest the blood vessels, liver, kidneys, bladder and other organs. Te body sets up an immune reaction and an infected person can become weakened and ill for many years. Some of the most important work in fnding a way of controlling this parasite, which is eﬀective but does not cost too much, was carried out by Dr Aklilu Lemma, one of Ethiopia’s most renowned biologists. ፍጥረታት ሁሉ ይችን ምድር ሲወርሱ የተሰጣቸው አስገራሚና ልዩ ውብ ተፈጥሮ አላቸው፡፡ ከነዚህ የተፈጥሮ ፀጋ ከተሰጣቸው ድንቅ የምድራችን ፍጥረታት መካከል አንዱ የንስር አሞራ ነው፡፡ የንስር አሞራ ምድቡ ከአእዋፍ ወገን ሲሆን ተፈጥሮ የሰጠችው ድንቅ ሚስጥራዊ ተፈጥሮ ግን የተለየ ያደርገዋል፡፡ ዛሬ በዓለማችን የሰው ልጆች አማካኝ የዕድሜ ጣሪያ 65 ዓመት በሆነበት ዘመን ንስር አሞራ ከአዕዋፋት ዘር 70 ዓመት የመኖር ፀጋ ተፈጥሮ የቸረችው የእድሜ ባለጸጋ ነዉ። አስገራሚው ነገር ይህ ድንቅ አእዋፍ ዕድሜው 40 ሲሆን ተፈጥሮ ሁለት አማራጮችን በፊቱ ታቀርብለታለች፤ እንደ አማረበት መሞት ወይም እድሜውን ወደ 70 አመት ከፍ ለማድረግ ተፈጥሮ ያዘጋጀችለትን የመከራና የስቃይ ጽዋ ምሬት አጣፍጦ በመጎንጨት ተጨማሪ የ 30 ዓመት የድል ዋንጫ መቀዳጀት፡፡ ንስር አሞራ ከተፈለፈለ ጀምሮ 40 ዓመት ከኖረ በኋላ ምግቡን ለማደን የሚገለገልበት ጥፍሮቹ ከመጠን በላይ ስለሚያድጉ ምግቡን መሬት ላይ ማንሳት ያቅተዋል፡፡ አጥንትን ሳይቀር መስበር አቅም ያለው መንቁሩ ስለሚታጠፍና ስለሚጣመም ምግቡን እንደወትሮው መመገብ ይሳነዋል፡፡ ክንፉና በአካሉ ላይ ያሉ ላባዎች ስለሚከብዱት፤ያ ሰማየ ሰማያትን እየሰነጠቀ እንደ ሚግ ጀት ይበር የነበረው ሀይሉ ይክደዋል፡፡ በዚህ ወቅት ያ ድንቅ የአእዋፍ ዘር ንስር አሞራ በሁለት ዉሳኔዎች አጣብቂኝ ውስጥ ይወድቃል፡፡ የመጀመሪያው አማራጭ ከዚህ ...
